The adaptive capacity of rural communities in Bolivia, Spring 2013

 

The rural communities of Santa Rita de la Cruz and San Miguelito in the Chiquitano Dry Forest of lowland Bolivia are at risk to climate change. Through participant observation, photography, and personal interviews, I catalogue the adaptive capacities of these two communities.

South Africa Climate Change Mosaic
Investigating the global framework for climate policy, Fall 2011
 
In order to understand the intricacies of climate change, it is essential to evaluate the political method through which countries respond to this ever-present threat. The semester included a trip to Washington, DC to speak with professionals in the realm of climate change and concluded with a three-week visit to South Africa to attend and cunduct research at the UNFCCC COP17. Throughout the process, all of the participating students contributed to a blog.

Building Sustainable Communities
The Greater Carlisle Project, Fall 2013

 

The one-year plan of the Greater Carlisle Project calls for an investigation into the structure, governance, and finance mechanisms that will dictate how the organization will function in the future. Lacking a full-time employee, I, along with two other students, met with local government officials, community members, and explored case studies to develop recommendations for the interim steering committee of the Greater Carlisle Project.

Reducing Dickinson's Carbon Footprint
The potential for solar thermal at Dickinson, Fall 2012

 

Solar thermal technology is as impressive as it is underutilized. Using solar radiation to heat domestic hot water can be a cost effective way to reduce carbon emissions. Through cooperation with the Stone House Group and Dickinson College Facilities Management, I evaluated the potential for solar thermal on the Dickinson Campus through payback period analysis. This document also serves to advise Luther College on their potential for solar domestic hot water investment.
